Gert's Royals Twitter says no Dutch Royals will attend Pope Francis's funeral due same day of Koningsdag Netherlands Palace confirmed but will send Dutch PM and Foreign Minister in Dutch Royals in behalf

QuoteNetherlands Palace has confirmed no Royal will attend Pope Francis's funeral due to the Koningsdag celebrations that same day.

The Netherlands will be represented by the country's Prime Minister & Foreign Minister at the Pope's Funeral.

QuoteOne European Monarchy possibly not sending a royal to the Pope's funeral is the Netherlands.

The funeral falls on Koningsdag (King's Day), which is the Netherland's National Day and the Monarch's official birthday celebration.

Koningsdag usually takes place on Willem-Alexanders's actual birthday, April 27th, but since that is a Sunday this year, was moved to the day before.

QuoteInterestingly enough, Princess Ariane of the Netherlands will actually be in Italy on Saturday, missing the Koningsdag (King's Day) events. The Palace said she has to study for her final exams at United World College of the Adriatic in Italy.

QuoteThe Netherlands did not send a royal to the last Vatican State Funeral for Pope John Paul in 2005.

I wonder why the NRF decided not to send a member of the Royal Family to Pope Francis's funeral. They are Protestants, but then so are several other countries who have sent representatives. They are few in number but then so are the Norwegians (who are pared to the bone numbers wise.) And Princess Ariana is actually studying in Italy, though probably she is not senior enough. Probably because of King's Day celebrations, but couldn't Queen Maxi, a Roman Catholic, attend?

It's a bit of a shame as practically every country on earth is sending a senior representative to this funeral, such was the admiration for the late Pontiff. Even Trump (not exactly the most religious individual on earth) is attending, and stating that he is 'looking forward to it!'However I guess the Netherlands RF have their reasons. NB, why not send the heir, with a Govt official?

I think it's a national day or something in the Netherlands. King's Day. Maybe that's the reason, but still, you'd think someone from the family would attend
