Speaking a foreign language is unusual today among younger British royals but not in the BRF of Edward's generation. Princess Marina, the Duke of Kent's mother, and her sisters, knew several European languages and when George was growing up, even after WW2 many of his relatives and old family friends could speak German. He may have taken lessons at school as well.
