Emperor and Empress visit evacuation center

Watch VideoThis week, the Japanese Emperor and Empress have visited shelters in Tokyo following the devastation of the recent earthquake and tsunami. Emperor Akihito has spent his life working to bring his role closer to his people. During his visit to the sports venue that is currently serving as a temporary shelter, Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko knelt to speak with 300 evacuees in their temporary housing. The Imperial Couple took about an hour to make their way around the shelter, and many said that the Emperor's visit has given them the courage to move forward.

Emperor Akihito addresses Japan following earthquake

The earthquake off the coast of Japan is still causing damage as Japan fights to cool the Tokyo Electric Power plant from overheating. Last night, Greg Jaczko (chairman of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission) said that attempts to cool the nuclear reactors seem to be failing, sending panic through Japan. The depth of the crisis was emphasized yesterday by a rare TV appearance by Emperor Akihito, who said he was "deeply concerned" by this tragedy. He continued, "I hope from the bottom of my heart that the people will, hand in hand, treat each other with compassion and overcome these difficult times." The Emperor is deeply revered by his people, though very rarely makes television appearances.

World royalty supports Japan during aftermath of earthquake

Earthquake destruction in Japan - photo released for general use by the US Navy - Photo ID 110312-N-0000X-003 Japan was devastated by an 8.9-magnitude earthquake this past weekend, and the royal families from around the world are offering their condolences and support. The UK's Queen Elizabeth sent a message to Japan's Emperor Akihito saying: “Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the dreadful disaster.”

Emperor receives President of Pakistan

His Imperial Majesty the Emperor of JapanHis Imperial Majesty the Emperor of Japan has received the President of Pakistan in Tokyo. President Zardari is currently in Japan and is set to also visit the Prime Minister and several other government officials.

This was President Zardari’s second meeting with Emperor Akihito. President Zardari met the Emperor in April 2009, when he visited Japan to lead Pakistan’s delegation at the Friends of Democratic Pakistan meeting.
