I took a phonetics class in college, and one of our assignments was to listen to another person talk, and write down how they said certain words. One difference between myself and another girl who had grown up in Georgia was she said "MacDonald's" where I said "MicDonald's."

BOT: It comes down to etymology, linguistics and ethnography. An example can be taken from literature like Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes were Watching God. Zora was an anthropologist.

I speak English and French, a little bit of Japanese, Spanish, Russian, German, Mandarin, Italian and a few words of Greek and Portugese. I'm hoping to visit Japan for the first time next year so I really need to work on my Japanese before I go as from what I can gather it isn't a country that is English friendly plus I wouldn't wish to appear ignorant!

Sometimes people pick up their manner of speaking or grammar based upon the environment they were brought up in and/or the local. For instance, my husband grew up in the southern half of our state and out in the country. He tends to use "is" and "are" incorrectly every now & then which still grinds on my nerves after 25 yrs of marriage but I realize he picked up this habit from his family. His sister misuses these words as well as her husband, etc. From this, I came to the conclusion their environment influenced their grammar.

My mother would pronounce "Illinois" with the "s" and we all know it's silent. Again, the environment she grew up in influenced her considerably.

Just my two cents worth...
