Analysis: Pros And Cons Of Royal Patronage

Artists, musicians, and the selected poor have benefited from royal patronage for centuries, but in modern times this patronage is on an altogether far bigger scale and impact.

After her marriage to Prince Charles, the late Diana, Princess of Wales received hundreds of patronage requests.

Thirty years on, in 2011, history repeated itself when the Duchess of Cambridge was inundated with similar requests. It is not hard to understand why the charities would make a beeline for such glamorous and high-profile royal patrons.

It is the charities which make the initial approach, presenting the potential patron with a tough and invidious choice.

Acceptance is generally on the basis that it reflects the interests of the royal individual and that they can devote sufficient time.

Interesting article.
It seems to be its a circle of co-dependence: the various charities can benefit from a royal patronage, and the royal family existence relies heavily on public appearances at events which both keep public approval and maintain public interest.
As a tax payer, and a visual learner, I like to SEE the money alloted to the senior royals' salaries spent on them making appearances, and supporting causes that I believe in. I agree that the scale and impact of royal patronages has increased dramatically- particularly within the recent climate of the growing favour for a republic in various commonwealth nations (and in Britain)- and the politcal importance of the patronages adds another dimension.

Rather symbiotic relationship.   But I would throw in the media as another bit to the relationship.  The media needs the royals as much as the royals need them and the same goes for the charities
