Victory for Kate Middleton as men-only university club splinters
Ten years after the Duchess of Cambridge helped found St Andrews University's first women-only club in protest of an elitist men-only society, her alma mater has endorsed a breakaway group that will promote inclusion for all, regardless of gender.

The development will be considered something of a victory for the Duchess and a sign that the infamous Kate Kennedy Club, which has long proved a thorn in the side of St Andrews, is being further ostracised.
Founded in 1926, the selective club admits only a handful of members each year and refuses to involve women. Prince William is said to have declined to seek membership in disapproval of its rules.

The Duchess of Cambridge is entitled to claim a little credit for the gradual transformation of views.
In 2002, she helped form The Lumsden Club, which set out to support women's issues and donate funds to women's and children's charities. The club was named after Louisa Lumsden, warden of the first residence for female students at St Andrews who was made a Dame for services to women's education.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with organizations that limit their memberships by gender.  The boy scouts, girl scouts, fraternities, and sorrorities are all groups where membership is dependent on what gender you are.

But if Kate was so supportive of women's rights in college I wish she would get involved with a charity that focused on that now that she's a royal. Hopefully this will be something she gets involved with as the years go on.

"I agree with Lothwen."  Trust me, you will say this more than once.

She is*, but with and through her husband, Prince William, whom is the Patron of 100 Women in Hedge Funds. This organization of women around the world are part of The Princes Forum (The Prince William (Catherine) and Harry Foundation), they are supporting PW charities; CentrePoint, Child Bereavement and Skill Force.

You have a point - there is something to be said for traditions after all, and there was obviously nothing stopping the ladies from starting their own gender-biased club.

As for this relating to Kate - I don't think she has the right to claim any credit for the current happenings at St. Andrews (nor is she, the Telegraph is simply handing it to her).
Life doesn't have a remote. So get up and change it yourself.

Thanks for the reminder, ya'll. I had forgotten she was one of the founders of the Lumsden Club. Good to know she and Will were on the same side even then.  :flower:

In theory I agree with you but these clubs form the basis for access and connections in the business world and beyond, much like men who do business and deals at the mens only golf club.    Definitely a step in the right direction!

^ Richard Kay was the first to report it, April 2004.

Kate is a founding member of the female equivalent of the Kate Kennedy Club, the Lumsden Club, which aims to support women's issues and donates funds to women's and children's charities.

Which may be true, keep in mind the KK Club was founded around the 1920's, whilst the Lumsden Club 2002, one year after Kate entered St. Andrews University.  Other old reports said she was the co-founder.
