The Duchess of Cambridge has been on the cover of Hello! magazine no fewer than 43 times in the last 53 issues

In the spirit of debate, she has to be selling those issues like hot cakes or they would use Keira Knightly, Princess Eugenie or Adele instead of Kate. Numbers don't lie and they show how popular Will's wife actually  is. I am stunned that she is that popular. A magazine is all about volume and Kate is the big money maker these days. Will she keep selling like this? Time will tell but now she is pure gold at the cash register.  :flower: I don't buy Hello very often but I have bought a lot of the People magazines with her on the cover.

I most definitely would not buy any mag with Kate on the cover.  But hey - that is me .

There was a thread all about this  - I'll try and find it and link to here  :flower:

Found it

It depends on what you mean by saying "don't sell" - Of course they sell.  Exactly how many "sell" - is the question-!

I think we'd have to look at sales numbers and see if an issue with Kate as the main cover story sells better than a magazine without Kate as the main cover story.  So you can say that People magazine had Kate on "27/52" covers (totally made up numbers here, btw) but if those issues didn't sell as well as the other 25 issues, then you can make the argument that she "doesn't sell."  If, however, the sales for her issues are higher than the other issues, then you can say that she "does sell"

"I agree with Lothwen."  Trust me, you will say this more than once.

They've been married for less than a year so the Cambridges are still pretty popular and having Kate as their covergirl should sell well. I'm not sure how accurate this is, I've read it on another forum, apparently her popularity is still not on par with Diana during her first years. Although Kate's covers do sell well, it has not got the 'Di' effect. I've been in UK for almost 3 years and what I have noticed is that Hello magazine absolutely fawns over Kate and the whole Middleton family.

Hello! magazine is the royal/aristocratic/A-Lister equivalent to OK! Magazine so it's no wonder Kate features on the cover so often as she's at the core of their philosophy.  I'm surprised she hasn't featured on the cover of The Lady more often (if at all).

It's probably the same old readers/buyers that buy the mag religiously for their horoscopes, puzzles, etc and just happens Kate's on the front cover through no choice of the consumer.

Thanks for the nice discussion.  :thanks: I think if her picture on the cover didn't sell more of their issues that she would be quickly replaced by a person or persons who sold more magazines. I have read that is the way it works. You don't put a person on the cover that slows down circulation but do just the opposite. She has been on lots more covers in America, like McCalls, Woman's Day, Life and Style, Redbook, Ladies Home Journal and Vanity Fair, not counting the dozens of covers where she and Will are pictured together. Here are a lot of her covers but not all of them.http://magazine-covers.lucywho.com/kate-middleton-magazine-covers-t45514.html
I had forgot she was on Tatler. Orchid she was on The Lady http://www.princess-diana-remembered.com/uploads/5/3/3/5/5335384/2033564.jpg?313
and so was "peachy Pippa ."  :hehe: :flower: Even Carole Middleton made it. http://www.princess-diana-remembered.com/uploads/5/3/3/5/5335384/7919402.jpg?289

I think shes popular thats undeniable...but being popular dont mean eeryone loes her!!!Fact!
Just to make a constrast with another dicussion about media and public opinion being negatie or positie on her...i think its kinda of diided...and the negatiity has grown fast...my iewso in at least...wich is predictable...someone so in eidence and in such position at some time will become hated by many...just to be loed again..and tgen hated and on and on and on......

Regardless of whether or not anyone here would buy a magazine because Kate is on the cover, obviously there are a lot of people who would, and do.  Magazine editors don't put people who don't sell on the cover of their magazines.  They put pictures of people who will sell well.  Editors have one goal ... sell magazines, sell newspapers, as many as they can.  Because if they don't, they get replaced.  It's that simple.  When she stops selling more magazines with her picture on the cover than without, then they'll put someone else there.  There's also a discussion about this somewhere on the forum, and there's also a discussion somewhere here about how many covers Kate was on last year.  I don't have time to look for them right now.  Maybe tomorrow.

I'm not surprised she's not as popular as Diana.  She probably never will be.  She's an entirely separate human being, she's not trying to be Diana, so why compare her?

It depends on the time frame I think because Diana had times of extreme popularity and then valleys where her popularity plummeted, no matter how briefly or extended. At this point Kate has already been on more magazine covers than Diana was in so short a space of time. The internet awareness of Kate all over the world is one factor. Of course you are right, Cinrit, that girl Kate sells magazines like there is no tomorrow and I think this trend will continue for a very long time. It's true that the editor would have lost her job after 1 or 2 issues flopped let alone 40 or so. You swap faces when sell outs don't happen. I never buy a magazine with certain celebs on the cover but millions of other folks do and those same celebs keep appearing on the newsstands.

Right now they believe she will sell and they will push it to the point of overkill. I was shopping this morning and I saw a cover I believe it was called the Globe that had a picture of Kate and Prince William. The headline said Kate was crying because she had a miscarriage right before Prince William went to the Falklands. Which shows that they will even make up stories about her to try and sell their magazines. I don't buy celebrity rags so I did not read the story but if this were true it is something they would have kept private.

Definitely there are more magazines out there than during Diana's time, and with a larger population plus the internet, it won't be a surprise if Kate has the same, if not, a larger following than Diana. Editor of Us magazine stated her biggest issue was the Royal Wedding. As for her being popular and not necessarily loved by everyone...well, regardless, those who don't like/love Kate can't seem to stop talking/reading about her. Daily Mail and other tabloids/magazines/papers know this: love her or hate her, these publishers are more than willing to exploit that interest.

I absolutely agree, Snokitty. They keep inventing "news" about Will and Kate because it makes serious money for publishers, true or not. I'd like to welcome you and DrReSi to the forum.  :flower: :flower: Thanks for the news about the Us magazine record, DrReSi. Does your name stand for a delicious chocolate candy?  :D
I noticed posters who said they wouldn't buy a magazine with Kate on the cover and I wonder if they would pass up an exclusive interview with a personality they were a fan of in order to not buy that magazine. If so, I couldn't do that. I'm not a Martha Stewart fan at all but if her own magazine had something in it useful or entertaining to me, I'd buy it. No one stands in the way of my enjoyment.  :happy17: :P

You are really welcome, DrReSi.  We have a candy in the USA called Reeses, they are chocolate and peanut butter. Their nickname is Reesies.
Am just about to to a search and see the most recent Kate covers.
Here's the proof of Kate selling out magazines, from publishers! Most popular and all that.

If recent experience is anything to go by, Kate Middleton’s face on the cover sells magazines, from the posh society titles through the slimming and health magazines to the supermarket weeklies. This is terrific news. What a boon it is to suddenly have this attractive young woman, who appeals to everyone from the strap-hanging commuter girls clutching a can of Red Bull to ward off a clubbing hangover through the bride-to-be planning her trousseau to the infant-encumbered housewife making her way round Tesco. And, what’s more, since she’s not a pop star or film star, Kate Middleton is constitutionally obliged to be available to have her picture taken a couple of times every week, preferably in a new outfit. Her husband’s mother was of course the perfect cover star - particularly in the later years when she was that most sought-after figure they still talk wistfully about in American magazine publishing, the holy grail, the “famous beautiful woman with a problem” – but even she didn’t touch as many bases as Kate, who’s a figure that the younger readers of Grazia and Look can identify with.
:P Good for Kate !

They even have some heart shaped ones for Valentine's Day. Yes, it's good to know straight from the publishing industry that Kate sells the most publications, making her the most popular of them all. It may annoy a few people but I think most would admit that she has done nothing to diminish her popularity. :PR:
