Wow Mike, I worry about Will and his three colleagues more than ever now. A Spanish paper said William was supposed to go there in 2009 for training exercises but for safety sake they cancelled the operation and they say that Will "lobbied" to go now which I hope is not true because it is so stirring the pot.

Cameron's comments about colonialism have roiled Argentinian politicians and protesters alike.

Demonstrators marching outside the British Embassy in Buenos Aires this month burned British flags and urged Argentina to sever ties with the United Kingdom

I think Cameron's  rash words incited anger. Who is he to speak  against colonialism? Pot - kettle - black, isn't it?

Argentina always plays up the issue of the Falkland Islands to divert attention from unpopular reforms, and legislation. Their rhetoric has also increased since the discovery of billions of pounds worth of oil in Falkland waters.

I am not at all concerned about this issue. The islands are secured by the British Armed Forces, and the idea of Argentina even looking into the option of attacking is just silly. The most extreme of actions they can take is withdraw their ambassador in London, and ask Her Majesty's Ambassador in Buenos Aires to leave.

William is serving in the RAF so he takes his service seriously and so whatever transpires in the Falklands I am sure they will transfer him

Prince William flies into a storm

“Prince William’s visit,” says Brigadier Bill Aldridge,” is entirely routine and normal for a search and rescue pilot,(but) search and rescue is part of our mission to deter aggression. We are prepared.”
On the islands, every Falklander I talked to, without exception, seemed genuinely pleased that William is about to arrive.
“It’s great to see a Royal coming…and doing some work,” one local told me, as he kitted up for a football match pitting Stanley FC against the crew of HMS Montrose, one of three Royal Navy ships here as part of the deterrence force.
For the record, the Navy team was stuffed. For the second game in a row.
“I hope it doesn’t cause any problems with Argentina,” said another, “because we’re British and we want to remain that way.”
The Falklanders are proud of their football team and their island tradition. It’s still quite startling to see Thatcher Drive; its cars driving on the left, past the red telephone box to the pub showing Premier league football. “Welcome to Stanley”, says the sign, “Twinned with Whitby”.
Prince William will travel the eight thousand miles and see much that is familiar, just three hundred miles from Argentina. But make no mistake,he’s flying into more than a job. A political and diplomatic hurricane is brewing.

Prince William deploys to Falkland Islands as tensions rise with Argentina
The Duke of Cambridge will fly to the Falkland Islands tonight to begin a tour of duty as tensions rise between Britain and Argentina over sovereignty.

Today it was confirmed that the Duke of Cambridge will begin his six-week deployment as a helicopter pilot earlier than expected. He will fly out from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, tonight.
He will be crewing one of two search-and-rescue helicopters on call 24 hours a day for missions flying out of a large British military base, 45 minutes from Stanley, the islands' capital.

Prince William is on his way to the Falklands. Good luck and God Speed -- he will come back as a RAF/SARF Pilot.

Will could be sent to the front line in some circumstances because Prince Andrew , when second in line to the throne, was sent to battle in the Falklands. His position was the same as Will's is today, just after Charles. I hope all the posturing on both sides stops. Will is already fully qualified.  :thanks:

Actually William isn't fully qualified.  He needs this time in the Falklands to finish his training so that he can actually become a pilot as opposed to a co-pilot and move up the promotion ladder on qualifications - he can't go to Captain without this time in The Falklands - although the normal deployment is longer than six weeks.

Yes Andrew did serve in The Falklands war in 1982 while he was second in line to the throne but William was already on the way at the time as well.  In fact he left for the war as 2nd in line and returned as 3rd as William was born while he was away.

The long-term result of this is that William won't be able to make an official visit to Argentina for quite some time and hopefully that is all.

When I say qualified, I mean Will is already part of SAR. I maintain that Will could be in combat as second in line to the throne just as Andrew was.
The Falklands War was over June 14 and Will was born on the 21st.

   Totally agree.

I too was puzzled as to why William was only going for 6 weeks as tours abroad are usually 6 months in the British armed forces, however I have since learned via another thread that William is going there on a training excercise.

But Andrew didn't return to Britain until September - which is why I said that he left 2nd in line and returned 3rd in line.

I am sure this will be another successful tour of duty for His Royal Highness. I hear the islanders are pleased to have him around.

Prince William starts Falklands duty with RAF

Quote
Prince William has started work as an RAF search and rescue pilot in the Falkland Islands.

The Duke of Cambridge will be part of a four-man crew in the territory providing cover for both the civilian and military population. The six-week deployment will see Flight Lieutenant Wales operate as a Sea King co-pilot, a post he has held at RAF Valley in Anglesey since qualifying.

His arrival comes amid renewed tensions between the UK and Argentina. A six-week deployment to the Falklands is routine for search and rescue pilots at this stage of their career, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said.

Thank you for the latest news, I see the MOD via Getty Images has taken a few new photos of Prince William in the Falklands.  He looks good, wishing him the best to pass the 6 week training course.
