Kate, 30, will join Her Majesty on two royal engagements next month while search and rescue pilot Wills is away, Buckingham Palace revealed.

The Duchess of Cornwall will also be there for a trip to Fortnum and Mason in central London on March 1 where the Queen will unveil a plaque to commemorate the regeneration of Piccadilly.

Too late to edit and add:

Kate to Join Queen and Camilla at a London Tea

Call it tea with Kate and the in-laws.

The Duchess of Cambridge will join her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth, and her stepmother-in-law, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, at an official engagement at Piccadilly's flagship Fortnum and Mason's store on March 1, as "three royal ladies have tea," a royal source tells PEOPLE.

The tea party with the trio will serve as the centerpiece of an event to mark the regeneration of the London area of Piccadilly and be the first of two outings for Kate while William is serving as a Search and Rescue helicopter pilot in the Falkland Islands.

The second event, on March 8, will find Kate joining the Queen and Prince Philip on a field trip to Leicester.

Yes, seems the media will be in full force for both occasions. I'm surprised and happy the Queen wants Catherine to accompany her in the kick-start of her U.K. Diamond Jubilee tour.

It surprised me as well, and I'm very curious to see how they work together. Has the Queen ever made such a gesture to an in-law before? I know she often has Sophie ride with her to church, but I'm not aware of the two attending an official event together.

Nope, it's a Kate exclusive and during the queen's Diamond Jubilee makes it all the more significant. What a dynamic team the two make.  I love Eros in Piccadilly Circus so I  wish I could be there. Didn't the palace on their website announce these joint appearances first?  :flower:

^^ Thanks, wannabe.  I didn't know Gayle King liked the Royals so much.  I'm an ABC kinda gal, but maybe I should start paying more attention to CBS.

Queen Elizabeth II attending public duties with other members of the Royal Family is nothing new. The Countess of Wessex, the Duchess of Gloucester and the Duchess of Cornwall often accompany the Sovereign at major royal events like Royal Receptions, State Banquets and when receiving foreign Heads of State all these women often are in attendance.

Yes, it's true many members of the RF attend banquets for foreign head of states and receptions.  Also it's very common to see other members of the RF attend Trooping of the Colours, Remembrance Sunday, Opening of Parliament, but aside; Phillip, late QMother, Charles & the late Margaret I don't recall the Q being accompanied by other members for event such as the upcoming Fortnum & Masons.  I think it a brilliant idea.  I do feel that Kate will learn a lot from closely observing another member of the RF especially the Queen.  It's what I've been saying for sometime that she should be given the opportunity to shadow another member of the RF.

This is wonderful news.  So glad to see that Kate is not being thrown in at the deep end like previous wives who married into the RF.

Yes Wannable and Cindy, the Will and Kate Barbie and Ken type dolls are pretty neat. Matell has done a super job on the clothing with details better than on most copies. Yes Hale , this is new, for the Queen to take another member of her family with her out on a public appearance as opposed to private receptions and banquets. It is very impressive. Only her huband has had that distinction up until now. Great for Kate.

Personally speaking - I wouldn't read anything into it

Both dates are important and very interesting, the first with the the Queen and 2 future Queen Consorts, the later the kick start of her Diamond Jubilee visits around the U.K.

The idea of Kate accompanying The Queen & Phillip is brilliant.  Can you imagine the media interest that will generate?  Both The Queen and Phillip do so much and yet so little is reported.  Kate accompanying them will help raise their profile.  I keep saying and will continue to keep saying that it takes the younger members of the RF to raise the profiles of the older ones.

I don't think the Queen needs Kate to raise her profile Hale! And the press will only write about Kate's outfit.

I don't think the young royals can even come close to the Queen and Prince Phillip as far as a profile. This is probably to show the public Kate has support and raise Kate's profile to be something other than clothes and hair.  When Prince Harry marries his wife will be the new person of interest. :PR:

The Queen & Doe are not about getting publicity , but simply do their work.Looking at their tour in Australia , they were able to pull in large crowds. She is their most loved member. This is about Catherine getting more credibility and slowly stepping away from her clotheshanger image ( although she will never escape it). With a good and regular stream of engagements , she should be able to become more that just clothes and hair and add more substance to her appearance.

I don't think it can be argued that William and Kate do get more media coverage than does the Queen and Prince Philip.  It's just the way of the world ... young people are more interesting to the general public than are older people.  Charles and Camilla get more coverage than the Queen and Prince Philip; William and Kate get more coverage than Charles and Camilla.  Why is coverage so important?  For one thing, it draws attention to the causes that they support.
