Kate has topped the list of fashion buzzwords for two year's running - the first person in history to do so
The Duchess of Cambridge has become the first person to top a list of the most powerful fashion 'buzzwords' for two years running.
Last year when the list was issued, Kate Middleton, as the duchess was known then, took the top spot.
And this year, Kate has taken first place on the annual Fashion Buzzword List poll yet again - this time thanks to the popularity of the term 'the Duchess Effect.'The list is compiled using a combination of data collected from an analysis of words mentioned on the Internet, in the blogosphere, and from the top 75,000 print and electronic global media outlets, as well as from new media sources as they emerge.
It is the first time someone has topped the list two years running. Lady Gaga previously held the number one and number two spots during the 2010 and 2011 seasons respectively. This time around however, Lady Gaga has dropped off the list completely.
A double victory was scored by the Middleton sisters this year, as it was revealed that the term 'Pippa's Bum' also made the Top 10, coming in at number five in the annual list compiled by Texas-based Global Language Monitor (GLM).
The Duchess Effect is a term that has come to describe anything Kate wears that goes on to sell out globally within hours.

Credit goes to the people who fashion these buzz words, I suppose, akin to Grazia fashioning the terms 'WAG' and 'BFF' which have become colloquial mainstays of the blogosphere.

I recall an article recently saying how the Essex fashion trend had superseded the 'Duchess Effect'. It has apparently become a billion pound industry. I wonder why this isn't number 1? Maybe because there isn't a definitive and mainstream buzzword associated with it.

I don't think longevity and outlasting Kate and the Duchess Effect was the point of raising the popularity of the Essex trend. Just that it has been deemed more successful this year hence it was nothworthy in light of the poll.

The two are hardly comparable. One is a television show with several "cast members", the other is an individual who is dressing in a completely different and conservative style to fit the position she is in. It's hard to compare what four or five people "sell" against what one person sells. Maybe that's where the difference lies. Perhaps if each Essex girl's influence was taken individually ....

Precisely, Blue Clover. That was the point. The poll is about top fashion buzzwords. In light of the TOWIE effect I'm quite surprised it hasn't made the list.

That girl is a hot commodity and it makes it nice that not all of her choices are too pricey. She is blessed to be so tall which gives her the ability to carry off a wide variety of creations. She wears some things I don't care for at all but quite a few that I do. So many celebs have a clothing line these days and perfume and jewelery. Which makes me wonder which sort of scent Kate likes to wear.

A Princess of Wales whose apparent greatest appeal is being a wag fashionista and flicking a great hair, and her sister, with a deified although inexistent arse are the british brightest stars. The british people, so known by their phlegmatic spirit (remember Queen Victoria? "We're no amused.") and snob and unattainable aristocracy (the unbridgeable class society), now, seems be leveling down (a world crisis reflex?) and become more and more following the standards of a republic of the tropics. A kind of Brazil of Europe, will be the rising of the LITTLE BRITAIN, whose leading exponent is the House of Middleton!

Oh, Lady, she's not yet the Princess of Wales, but in practice that's make no much difference at all, she's the wife of the future monarch, isn't she?
And "we're not amused" is a sentece that became a kind o symbol of the Victorian Age and even of the austerity of the british people anyway...As a foreigher, I think this sentece define british people a lot!

The point is the new addition to the British Royal family sells whatever she wears, hence the 'Duchess Effect'.

On the same note, Catherine can't avoid being very pretty and photogenic, she's slender and tall, its a plus she has. I'm sure photographers, media and the public are delighted with the aspects of a Pretty Duchess doing Royal Duties.

Diana, Princess of Wales was known first and primarily for her shining glamour , smile and style, then gradually, like Kate has evidenced as well, she became known for her causes and ability to connect with the people. As a princess, Elizabeth II was known for lovely taste in her wardrobe as well as being very pretty to behold. Diana's family was often in the headlines and we were reminded that Will and Harry were also of the House of Spencer as well as the House of Windsor. The Spencers had skeletons in their closet just as do the Middletons and Windsors but Kate's parents have the advantage of maintaining their marriage, a bit uncommon in today's Windsors of a similar generation. Pippa Middleton's reputation currently is better than the current queen's sister's became. I liked Margaret but she was happily on the wild side. Kate is one of the more subdued Duchesses in British history.

What else can the photographers, media, general public, clothing brands like, a Pretty Duchess. If she were fairly ugly, there wouldn't be all this 'hype' and the 1 Billion GBP factor.

Humm, for sure Kate is pretty, that's a very positive plus, I like to see pretty people, I think most of people do so (notice the overwhelming appeal of celebrities nowadays).
Let's see, what I like in Kate: I think she's pretty and elegant (although I don't like when she's too thin), love her hair.
What I dislike in Kate: she seems so distant, studied, fake, hides herself, has no connections with public... That's it.

The Americans have the Khardashians.
The British have the Middletons,.
But besides pretty girls and their **** really considerable and monumental, we also have bananas

I can understand why a Designer would want Kate to wear their clothes because of all the free publicity but I think Kate's choices so far have been either boring or pretty but plain, nothing to make people run out and want to buy them unless they have no life of their own and want to imitate someone else.
