The Duchess of Cambridge visits Liverpool
« on: February 02, 2012, 05:55:33 PM »
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2095542/Kate-Middleton-visit-National-Portrait-gallery-spending-Valentines-Day-Liverpool-William.html

in addition to the Lucien Freud exhibit, she'll be doing two events in Liverpool

Quote
As she will be spending her first Valentine’s Day as a married woman alone, the Duchess has decided to fill February 14 with a visit to Liverpool in support of charities, starting with The Brink - an alcohol-free bar linked to Action on Addiction, of which she became patron of last month.

The bar is social enterprise run primarily to help people recovering from drink and drug addiction as well as providing a social outlet for those not wishing to engage in alcohol.

The Brink is also a means for those in recovery to re-enter the workforce. Three quarters of the staff are recovering alcoholic or drug addicts and all profits from the bar are re-invested in other Action on Addiction recovery projects in Merseyside.

She will then go onto Ronald McDonald House at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital where she will meet staff and families who use the service, which provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation, enabling parents to stay close to their child and maintain a degree of normal family life.

Many of the youngsters concerned are critically ill and suffering from cancer, heart conditions or are in hospital as a result of serious accidents.

Kate will also officially open one of the new apartments – one of her first royal ribbon cuttings.  She will finish her day with a tour of the hospital’s facilities, including the oncology and burns units.
Alder Hey is one of Europe’s biggest and busiest children’s hospitals providing care for over 200,000 children and young people each year.
It is the designated national centre for head and face surgery as well as a Centre of Excellence for children with cancer, heart, spinal and brain disease

She'll never go "solo" - JLP will always be a constant - whispering in her ear - telling her where to go and guiding her - not saying that's a bad thing.

However, I wish I'd placed a bet - that an appearance would be on the cards - after her lavish holiday.

But the official word way back when said that she would be starting her royal appearances in the new year.   That would have been insider information SC.  And that would get you in big trouble.   :teehee:

They did indeed say that.  Let's just hope these 2 days won't be it - until another lavish holiday.
I wouldn't know HOW to place a bet anyhow  :P

I wonder if every thing she wears at these places will sell out in minutes? I certainly admire the causes she has elected to serve. I think she will attract a lot of donations for each of her charities as Diana did and still does.

Quote from the article "As Prince William arrived in the Falklands, his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, met drug and alcohol addicts on a private visit to a clinic which is run by the charity Action on Addiction, of which she is patron.
By choosing patronage of an addiction charity as one of her first official roles, she is following in the footsteps of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who became patron of Turning Point in 1985."

I interpret that as private as in not open to the public, not private as in secret.  If she was meeting with people recovering from addictions, everyone involved would want privacy to maintain confidentiality for the patients.

I remember Diana , among other royals, doing private visits like this.  And isn't this the kind of stuff everyone wants Kate to be doing in addition to the more flashy, highly publicized events?   This is the meat and potato stuff.

On the day that her husband arrived in the Falkland Islands to begin a six-week tour of duty with his RAF Search & Rescue squadron, the Duchess spent several hours at the headquarters of Action on Addiction, one of the four charities of which she is Patron.

The “private” visit was not announced by St James’s Palace, as the Duchess wants to gain an in-depth understanding of the charity’s work before she carries out any public engagements to raise its profile.

As Macrobug pointed out, confidentiality and privacy are of utmost importance to those in treatment for addictions or alcoholism.  Had the visit been known to the media yesterday, photographers would have been there, trying to get any pictures they could, and a golden star would go to whomever could get pictures of Kate inside the premises.

Exactly - if you were a recovering addict, you might be extremely annoyed at having your picture in the Daily Mail, accompanied by careful descriptions of what Kate is wearing.  Good for her to get started on her charity work.  She has begun to get an image problem, (whether deserved or not in some ways it does not matter).  The more she does - especially the non-glamorous work - the more her image will be improved again.  Moreover she may begin to find herself and discover what she is good at - not just as William's wife.

I don't reckon we will see her out and about other than shopping in the media, the charity visits will be kept under wraps apart from the visit to Liverpool on Feb 14 St Valentines Day. Let's face it Charles and Camillas turn to be on the front page.

I suppose it depends on your point of view really.  But I believe many have had a "Wizard of Oz" moment regarding Kate.  We only need to read the many negative comments regarding her ever so slow pace - with regards to "work"  :)

I'm way too old ... and smart ... to let any Wizard of Oz moments influence me.  Nor do I allow anyone else's comments influence me.  I'm capable of following my own instincts and making up my own mind. :flower:

Quite a big deal to me if it is just the Duchess and the Queen carrying out the engagement.
Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts.

It's charities like Action on Addiction which need all the publicity they can get, but I totally understand as to why there were no photographers allowed to be present.  Great to hear Kate doing something like this.  Yes.........this is the real meat & potatoes.

I am sure that if they have a fundraising event, they will put Kate front and centre to promote the charity.   All of her charities.   I think it is a wise strategy to publicize the big flash money events and keep private visits quiet.   The more exclusive the commodity is, the more valued it is.  If Kate is always in the paper and media, people lose interest, or worse, get annoyed and her value is lowered.

(I can just hear Orchid, SC and Lindelle grinding their teeth.  Kate?  Valuable?   Grrrrrr.....)
