I like to watch "House Hunters" and "My First Place" sometimes to just relax and get a look at what other houses look like inside.  Sometimes, it's hard to believe how picky people are over the smallest details that can easily be changed.  I'm especially nonplussed by the people who think 3200 or even 5000 sq. ft. is too small because they have a two or three kids.  I agree ... comfortable is relative.

This thread  is  probably  done  now and  I  just  want  to  say  my  point...pretty  same  what others said.

Middle class-in the UK, ok. Middle  class.  There  is  the aristrocacy.  Entertainters.  Politians.  Everybody  else.

I  guss there  she  is  considered  Middle  -class. Still,  even with UK  have a  class  system, Kate and her  family  seems to  be  in the straust  of  rich. Well  off.  Wealthy.  Their family  wealth  is that  of  lets  say, some  entertainers,  politicans,  writers, etc.  professionals .

Because  she  is  married to PW,  the  press likes using  Middle Class.

Even  in teh UK  with  the class system, true  Middle -Calls  would be that of Sophie RJ  -CoW  family.
A  secretary  mom  I  believe.  Her dad had  some sort  of  regualr  salaried  job.  She went  to regular schools, etc.

That  is the  thing that gets  me  is   the  shading  of  the truth  in media , the need to emblish  a  story  when there  true  story  is  good enough.

Sohie RJ  was a  Middle -Calls  ordinary  girl  who  really  married  a Prince;  STILL, there  are  many  layers  under that...Edward  and Sophie's  age, career  paths '  crossed,  years  living together,  divorces  of  his siblings, etc.  There  is  no  need  for  say  Mr. Cab  drivers'  daughter to think, hey, Kate  married  PWilliam, well, she has a  shot  at PHarry.  Nuh-uh.  Not happening.

Kate  's  family  was  rich.  Not aristocratic.  Self-made wealthy.  She  and her siblings  moved  in  all the right circles, right  schools,  places,  etc.  I  keep saying, if K  had  not  married  PW, she was  going to  marry  someone rich and connected. Seems her family  wants artistocracy,  not  social media,  entertainers, etc.

In the USA,  we  have  classes,  but  it  measn less and less.  It  is  like  a sliding  scale.  You  can be up today and  down and out tomorrow.   Old money, new  money, all the  same.  No  money  is  no  money.
many  people  may  have  a name, Kennedy 3rd generation grandkids and Rockefeller, for example,  but  no  money. Just  Upper Middle-Class.  One ahs  to  keep  marrying  money and  inheriting  money  and  earning big  money  to  keep  it  going. Trusts  only  last  so  long, for  so  many  generations.  Good example  is  Gloria  Vanderbilt and her  son ,Anderson Cooper.  She  was  born  when  you  had  the terms old   oney,  tons  of  poor  people,  slim  middle class.  Her dad  did  not  leave  much.  She  had  to  make  her money. She  had a name.  her son Anderson  , has made his own. their Vanderbilt money dried  up decades  ago and even before he was born.
The days  of  idle rich,  old  money  is  kind  of over.  Who ????

In the USA, like  UK, Kate and her  family  would be rich.  Self -made. Applauded for having that  selfmade,  entrepreneual  spirit.
Rich , I  am  not giving a  certain x  amount  of liquid  millions. Amonut  of dollars  and  cents depends  on region, lviing expenses,  family size,  spending and investment  habits, etc.

Middle-Class  is  going to state university,  having parents  or being yourself  of  jobs/professions-teacher, postal worker, nurse, property  owner, real estate  agent,  news  rpeorter,  journalist, police officer, pilot, flight attendant...etc.
I  am  not  giving  an  x  amount  on income.  The  cost  of  lviing in American city  x  is  higher than cost  of  living  in  American city y,  and so the pay  for  an RN  , school teacher,  etc.  here is  different  in Amer. x than  Amer. city y.

I  am  not picking on Stix.
I  don't  know  if  Stix  lives  in  the  USA.

Bill  Gates is  not  Upper  Middle Class

Bill  Gates is  very  rich, wealthy, Extremely.
The  Bush  Family  is  not  Upper Middle  Class.
You  are talking  about  the  top whatever  percentage  of  Americans. Bill gates  is  one  of the richest  people  in the world.
The Bush's , they  can  be  called   Old Money adn so was Barbra  Pierce  (Pres. Bush's  wife)  . Money there ,Pierce,   married  into the very wealthy Bush  family.
Now,  the Bush  's  have  money. Their  children  do. Their  grandchildren  will  inherit from  the their  parents.  But,  money runs  out.  Each generation.
Jenna  Bush  is  working.  She  is  not  idle rich. She  married a  guy  from an   rich family.  Not  like  hers, but  what  we  call rich.
None  of the Bush grandkids  can sit  down and not  work  and  make their   own  money.

We  don't  have the aristocracy  here.  Taxes  . Cost  of  your  living.  Lawusits.  Money runs out  unless  you  are some  heiress, I assume.

Upper  Middle  Class  here-doctors, lawyers, engineers, store woners,  principals, etc.

Middle  Class-  teachers, police officers,

Then  here, up today. Down tomorrow.
Your  spending  norms. Investments. These  things matter.

I   grew  up  Middle Class - family  owned  home,  nice  neighborhood, two  working parents, good  investors,  private  schools  5yrs.-old  17  yrs.  University, state, but still. Could  have attended  a  private  university.  China, silver.   Money  for  sports  games, concerts. Shopping.  Exclusive  shopping.  Vacations.  No govt. aid.

I  know  people  who are Upper Middle -Class-engineers, doctors, CPA's.

Rich, I would   earning a few  million a year. I  do  not  know  anyone.

I  have  a question  for  you guys.  I  keep  reading  in the  papers  that Kate ,Pippa go  shopping in whatever the street is  named, Road, for  high end shopping  as  if  only they  can shop  there.  I don't  get that. That  is  , I  am sure,  British  media talk. Kings' Road, I  think  is the street.

Here  in the  USA,  what  are exclsuive  shops ? Anybody  can  go  shopping  in Barney's, Saks, Neimans. High end  malls and shopping.  Do  you have a job?  Good credit?  Then  you  can go  with  Amex,  Visa,  Mastercard    or  store card  for these  stores.  You don't  need some kind  of pass  or  papers, LOL.
No  one  needs to see who  you are. You  got  cash, shop.  You got  credit, shop.  Whoever's  money  all spends  the  same.

The USA is the biggest and greatest example of Social Mobility (Climbing) thanks to the freedom and liberties afforded from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln.  The Obama's are a wonderful example of just about 500 years ago, his race and roots were slaves in colonial America.

See, and that's why I think the press should stop calling the Middleton's "middle class" because that means a lot of different things to different people.  They can say she's a "commoner" and that her family is not aristocracy, and they'd be accurate, but the term "middle-class" is really subjective to a lot of people.

The fact is that "middle class" has been a stereotype, a synthesis for ordinary, banal, common place, mainstream, predictable, desire of social ascention, and above all, MEDIOCRITY.
If you take a good look, those are not totally bad things, but quite petty.
That could be a synthesis of Kate Middleton and her family.
And, of course, there's nothing to do with the amount of money they own, but with their family origins and their aspirations.
For sure that's it when press and people are referring to when they say Kate is middle class.
That's simple this way.

Social Mobility will be even better when universities are all free.

In Denmark everyone can get free acces to all the universities if they have the aquired grades and manages to pass exams. And all students get subsidy from the state to cover rent and food.

^I don't think all universities should be free, but I do think that they need to be a bit more realistic about the cost and giving aid.

When I went to community college in Virginia it cost $42.50/unit in 2006.  Now it costs $111.50/unit (so almost 3x as much in just 6 years).  Yet whenever I have tried to get aid I couldn't because they said I made too much money, even though everything but my wages were going up (rent, car insurance, gas prices, food, etc.) Same thing with taxes-I don't get the Earned Income Credit because I "made too much money" and I don't have any dependents.
