I don't think it was about the name of the dog as much as it was the complaint about the pictures being published.  Will and Kate cried harrassment over pictures taken with a wide-range lens on a public beach.

If the picture had to be taken with a wide-range (more likely a long-range) lens, then obviously it was sneaked and shouldn't have been taken.  If the photographer had deemed it okay to take the picture, he would have walked right up to them and asked permission.  He didn't.  Public figures do have a right to some privacy in their personal lives.

The PuppyGate comes to an end.

Quote
LUPO JOINS THE ROYAL FAMILY: KATE REVEALS NAME OF NEW PUPPY
It's been a more closely guarded secret than the crown jewels.
But finally the Duchess of Cambridge let slip the name of her new cocker spaniel puppy today - Lupo. The name means wolf in Italian.
Kate finally revealed the name of the black pup three weeks after royal aides refused to confirm it claiming it was an invasion of their privacy. Teacher Lisa Hancock, 37, said the duchess told her class of children at Rose Hill Primary School when given a cuddly toy dog.
'The duchess said she wanted to name it after her dog at home...  I think it was called Lupin or something,' she said.
Royal officials then confirmed the name was Lupo: 'There is no significance in it apart from they liked the name,' an aide said.

Sort of like naming a cat "Simba".

No wonder they were trying to hide the name.  :laugh10:

Lupo is wolf in Italian, in Spanish it would be Lobo, common used dog name.

I thought they were British and I thought the Puppy was a Spaniel.  My mistake I guess.

^So what?  My middle name is Hebrew and my family isn't Jewish.

I think naming the dog "Lupo" means that they're Harry Potter fans

I haven't read or seen Harry Potter so I don't really know any of the names except Harry Potter of course. I just think the whole hiding the dogs name in the first place was ridiculous. The pictures of the dog I saw does not look like a wolf. I can also see the connection between wolf and dog though. Maybe I need another cup of coffee because I am being a little bit flippant this morning.   :blowkiss:

^One of the characters in Harry Potter is named "Lupin" and he's a werewolf

And I agree that keeping the dog's name so secretive was a little silly, but maybe a reason why was so people couldn't call the dog away?

During the visit, a little boy handed Kate a dog stuffed animal, and she asked whether it had a name. When told there wasn't one, she suggested to name it after her own pup: Lupo.

The picture with them walking the dog on the beach shows the dog has his own little wellies. To keep the paws clean I assume. How cute.  :hehe:

So the Cambridges decided to reveal the name to kids rather than the press. I can see how the next big announcement (bun in the oven news) will be made.

Regarding Lupo's own Twitter account.  I loved the following conversation:

From Monty Windsor - Royal Corgi

From HRH_Lupo who replies to Royal Corgi

Funnily enough, Camilla Tominey, a royal correspondent is cross about the news to the public (kids) rather than to the press.  Richard Palmer and Robert Jobson are more cool, calm and collected.  :)

Isn't he lovely! Kate can't hide her delight as she takes Lupo the pup for walkies in Kensington Gardens
By REBECCA ENGLISH

He’s the pup who – until this week, at least – was one of the Royal Family’s most closely guarded secrets.
Now meet Lupo, the four-month-old cocker spaniel who has most definitely fallen on his paws after being picked as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first pet.
Walking through Kensington Gardens this week, close to the cottage she shares in the palace grounds with Prince William, Kate couldn’t hide her delight at the pup’s antics.
