Out and About: Royal invasion of the USA

Prince Haakon in CaliforniaThroughout October, royals from around the world converged on the United States - privvy to luke warm receptions and almost no local media coverage.

Most Americans are aware that Britain's Prince Harry is in our midst - spending 6 weeks in military training exercises (and royal-bachelor-exploits) in Arizona and California. But other royals, like Prince Haakon and Prince Daniel, have hardly made a ripple upon arriving in the States.

William & Kate travel to Denmark

Kate and WilliamNext week, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will travel to Copenhagen Denmark, to visit UNICEF’s emergency supply center to view the effort to distribute emergency food and medical supplies to East Africa, where severe food shortages are affecting more than 13 million people. The decision by The Duke and Duchess to visit has come about at short notice following the worsening crisis in East Africa, caused by drought, high food prices and ongoing conflict in Somalia.

Norwegian royals lead mourning

Norway Royal Coat of ArmsThe Norwegian royals lead the country in mourning Monday, following Friday's slaughter on Utøya island. Crown Prince Haakon made numerous speeches that day, saying that the "streets are filled with love" and reminding Norwegians that they "have the power to meet hate with togetherness." Over 100,000 Norwegians came out for the rally.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit's step-brother, policeman Trond Berntsen, was among the dozens killed by Anders Behring Breivik.
